Shine On Series #9

Shine On, Shine On was the subject of a blog that I did a couple weeks ago. Did you see it? If not, here is the link Shine On, Shine On!  I have decided that there are a lot of people that help me “Shine” and I am going to feature them on my Shine On, Shine On series.

Meet Terryn Drieling.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I grew up in northeast Nebraska on a feed yard where my family has been raising beef cattle for more than 40 years. After high-school, I had every intention of becoming a veterinarian, but somewhere around the middle of my freshman year of college I realized my true passion was in feed yard management. So, I changed my major and after finishing college moved to western Nebraska where pursued my passion on the same feed yard for 7 years, started a family, and met Naomi.
In 2013, we made a huge change – that of moving to the Sandhills for my husband’s dream job. I ended up resigning my post at the feed yard to become a stay-at-home-mom and ranch wife. It was a change that quite honestly took quite a little getting used to. But, it has resulted in happiness like our little family has never known and me finding a new passion in blogging/agvocating for beef.

What does your daily routines look like?
I try to be up around 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. every day, giving me some quiet time before everyone else gets up to have a cup (or 3) of coffee and get some writing done. Beyond that, our days look a little different depending on the time of year and what’s happening on the ranch – calving, breeding, weaning, preg checking, etc. On any given day, I might be working on the ranch with my husband and our kids, cooking lunch for a crew on big processing/vaccination days, or working in at Double A.
This type of ever changing day-to-day works really well for me, as I am not much of a planner. It’s not that I dislike having a plan. I actually love having a plan. It’s just that I get far too disappointed when my heart is set on my plan and then it changes, which is slightly strange considering the biggest plan change of my life thus far has ended up being the best thing for our family… hehe!

What inspires you to be you?
My hardworking husband, my beautiful kids, the unconditional love of my friends and family, the beauty of God’s creation… Seriously, there is just so much that inspires me. A few years ago, when I was going through a tough time in my life, I made the decision to focus on the good in each day because – every day may not be good, but there is good in every day. Focusing on the good, and a whole lotta prayer, is most definitely what got me through that tough time. And, it is what has continued to inspire me every single day since.

What do we all need more of?
Love. It is my perception that this day in age there is way more finger pointing, blame, and judgement being passed around than love. It seems as though we are all at the ready with our broad brushes to paint whole groups of people based on the actions of a select few bad actors.
Don’t get me wrong, I am by no means without fault in this area. However when I feel those less than loving feelings creeping up, I refer back to Romans 13:9 – “…and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore it is the fulfillment of the law.”
We need more love.

What do we all need less of?
Hate. Plain and simple – we need less hate. I saw this quote on a meme recently that pretty much sums up how I feel about our current love-hate ratio. It said, “Imagine how powerful we would be as a society if we loved as hard as we hated.” – Matt Rush
Seriously, I think we should all just ponder that for a while.

Do you have any advice for ranch wives or any women?
Be confident. If I could offer only one piece of advice to women, confidence would be it. Recognize that you are beautiful, that you are talented, and just own it.

How do you stay so motivated?
Doubters have always been my best motivation – you know, the people who tell me that I can’t do something. I get a kick out of proving those folks wrong, so I work hard and do what it takes to do just that. Recently, though, I have been finding my motivation in the success of others. I cannot tell you how much joy it brings me to hear good news, to hear the wins of my friends, family, and quite frankly, anyone who wants to share a win with me. And joy for me is invigorating.

Shine On~ Women in Agriculture~Kay Schrock

Shine On~ Women in Agriculture~Kay Schrock

Shine On, Shine On was the subject of a blog post that I did a while back.

Here is the link to my first Shine On, Shine On post!  I have decided that there are a lot of people that help me “Shine” and I am going to feature them on my Shine On, Shine On series.

This year I decided to start a new spin on my Shine On series and add a little more of agricultural spin. I am excited to be bringing you these interviews. My goal is to share these fine ladies stories with you all.  Help me welcome my second Shine On Lady, Kay Schrock.

From historic homesteaders to contemporary cattle ranchers, women have been the cornerstone of America’s agriculture heritage. In fact, the 2012 Census of Agriculture notes that nearly 1 million women are working America’s lands. That is nearly a third of our nation’s farmers.  Women are also scientists, economists, foresters, veterinarians, and conservationists. Women are in the boardrooms and the corner offices of international enterprises, and are the owners and operators of small businesses. Women are property owners and managers. Women are policymakers and standard bearers. Women are involved in every aspect of agriculture.

Shine On~Women In Agriculture featuring: Kay Schrock

Please tell us a bit about yourself and your career path.

I am a stay-at-home mom and wife. I am very careful what I allow in my life that takes me away from my home. As my kids get older, I am setting aside more time to write, photograph ranch life, and work on my blog. My goals are to become a better horsewoman, learn more about cattle health, and be able to help more on the ranch.

Tell us about your role and what does your “typical day” looks like.

I get up early to spend time in Bible reading and prayer. Then I make breakfast for my family, and homeschool our kids. Usually I workout for 30 minutes each day, or go for a run! Winter days are spent mostly at home in the house. In the summer, I spend a lot of time outside; riding with my husband, moving cows, checking mineral and water, etc. I also love gardening and puttering around my yard. We go to a lot of brandings in the summer as well. Usually I take my camera and get a lot of photos!
My husband is a hired hand on this ranch, but I was not hired on, so I don’t have any responsibilities on the ranch. But I do enjoy helping and learning, so I am out there when I can make it work! I do cook for the crew when they are working cattle on this end of the ranch.

Who has been (who is) your biggest influencer mentor? What have (did) you learn from them?

In photography, my biggest mentor is Chris Dickinson. He has shared his knowledge generously with me and many others. He taught me to see life through my lens with my heart. To pick out and capture what makes me go “aaahhh!”
In motherhood, one of my biggest examples has been Sally Clarkson. She shares openly the struggle of being a busy mom, and how to find rest and renewal in the midst of it all.
In ranching, I pretty much just try to be open to learn from anyone better than myself – which is nearly anyone, since I don’t know much at all!

How do you define personal success? How do you get there?

I believe success is being content and happy every day. The only way I know to get there is to live life for God instead of myself, be thankful, think of others more and myself less, and to be generous and kind to everyone. To find beauty and blessing in every day and every small thing.

How do you think women’s role(s) in farming/ranching/agriculture has changed over the last decade?

Well, I see fewer women in traditional mom/wife roles. Many women have to work in town to help support the family. Many more are starting side businesses to supplement the income. I see it becoming more acceptable for ranches to hire on women, and that is a good thing. I also see a lot of women making a fuss about being a female rancher, or wanting to be recognized as a woman who can do everything that men do. Personally, I want to be treated differently than the guys – I don’t want to lose my femininity in my quest for equality.

Learning from our mistakes is an important part of life, but sometimes rough, part of life. Would you mind helping others and share your mistake that you have made but taught you something important?

Once, I bought a pony colt without having the knowledge to train it. I eventually gave it away, and it has since been trained and sold as a kids pony. I thought watching a few dvd’s would give me the skills to train her. She was ‘just a pony’, after all. But I should have taken time to go watch and learn from a real horse trainer. Then worked my way up to where I had the skills, before trying to train a fresh colt. No one was hurt, the pony wasn’t messed up, but it was a waste of my time and money. If I want to do something right, it is worth some time and money on learning the skills.

How would you define “women in agriculture?”

I would say any woman who has a job in agriculture, or her husband works in agriculture. Ranching, farming, advocacy, etc.

What in your opinion, is the most important topic in the agriculture world right now?

Bridging the gap between organic vs. traditional food sources, and the care of animals. GMO’s, organics, pesticide usage, animal care… all things that scared consumers want to know about, but unfortunately they are often misinformed. I would like to see more quality, easy-to-understand websites and initiatives on this subject. Education is a powerful tool. If we can help consumers understand the truth, they will be more willing to buy our products.

What is in your daily toolbox? Planner? Phone? Computer? Special item(s) Why do you carry it with you?

Phone is a necessity! Calculator, calendar, camera, notes, and so much more! You can create a spreadsheet to track calving, pasture usage, or just about anything, then create a shortcut (like an app) so you can access it on your phone.
I try to carry a knife anytime I am outside. If I am horseback, I carry energy bars, chapstick and water, because it is so dry out here, and you never know how long you may be gone.

In closing, do you have any advice, quotes for young women, or anyone for that, starting their career in agriculture?

If you really want to live this life, then be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up. The perfect job will not be handed to you on a silver platter. You have to prove that you can work hard, be dependable, and just be a decent human being. You may have to start out working for free on the weekends to get some experience. Be creative! Find someone you look up to and ask if you can help them. Never burn your bridges. You never know who you may need later, or who may need you. Relationships are extremely important. Be gracious, don’t gossip, be kind, be diligent. Good help is hard to find – be that good help and you can get a job anywhere.

Is there anything you would would like to add?

Never think you know it all! Never stop learning. And be careful what you put online – even private messages can be screen-shot. 🙂

Kay~Thank you for taking time out of your day to answer a few questions. I appreciate all you do. I also appreciate our few chats and your support!

Here are a few more reasons that you help me Shine On:

🌟You have a good attitude on everything you do. I appreciate your “GO TO IT ATTITUDE.”

🌟I admire your willingness.

🌟I admire your faith!

Shine On Series #8

Shine On,
Shine On, Shine On was the subject of a blog that I did a couple months ago. Did you see it? If not, here is the link Shine On, Shine On!  I have decided that there are a lot of people that help me “Shine” and I am going to feature them on my Shine On, Shine On series.
Today’s Shine On features: Tiffany Schwenke

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Raised on family owned and operated ranch in Wyoming. I love working with horses and spending time with my family! I love watching the kids and colts grow and learn. I love producing the WYO WILD RIDE RANCH RODEO & HORSE SALE! I love meeting like minded people in the AG industry and becoming friends with them. I love promoting our western heritage. I feel so blessed to be born into this life and to now be sharing it with my kids. My husband and my dad are my 2 best friends and it gives me comfort to know they are always supportive in whatever I do. I am a Christian and I am so grateful for what God has blessed me with.

What does your daily routines look like?

Currently our mares are foaling, so my day starts out by checking on our mares and seeing if we have any new babies and just walking through the mares and loving on them and scratching their stretching bellies. Then I do chores at the barn and decide what colts are going to get worked with that day. The kids are out of school for the summer so they get to do all of this with me. I answer messages from people about our event throughout the day and try to post at least one thing about our upcoming event on social media. We have some really awesome horses that are consigned to be showcased in our ranch rodeo and sold in our sale, so it is my responsibility to do the best job I can at promoting our event so everyone involved has a successful outcome!

What inspires you to be you?

I think God is the root of who I am and through HIM putting me in this family and situation, I am right where I am supposed to be! I used to think I wanted to live in town and be a city girl… I tried it and I was wrong. lol There is nothing I love more than riding a horse and being in the country with my family. I think my kids inspire me to be better every day. They are such amazing little people with hearts of gold. They love animals and animals love them.

What do we all need more of?

Prayer. 1 Thessalonians 5:16 says Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God.” I find the ultimate happiness and comfort from prayer and I pray little prayers all day. I am a naturally happy person and I believe it is because I have gratitude towards God for being so blessed with this life I live. I think a lot of people talk a lot about prayer and say they will, I just hope that they do take the time to bow their heads and talk to God.

What do we all need less of?

Stress. Stress is a killer. It can be consuming if you let it. I heard a neat quote once that said, “Water around a boat is fine, it’s when the water gets in the boat that it sinks.” I try to not sweat the small stuff and not to let stressful situations get me down. Again, this is where prayer is so helpful. Spending time outside can sure make a person feel better, so whenever I feel stressed, I go outside, find something to do and pray while I’m working.

Do you have any advice for ranch wives or any women?

BE YOURSELF. God made you unique in your own way so don’t try to fit in, it will never suit you. Laugh, Love, and soak in the good moments in your life. Be happy about your age… with it comes wisdom. Be grateful for what you have. Be honest and never let someone else’s opinion of you change how you see yourself… they don’t know you as well as you know yourself and they don’t understand your journey.

How do you stay so motivated?

I think motivation comes and goes for us all… some days it’s hard, but when you see growth and see a kid or a colt learn something it renews my drive to keep the process going. I also learn more every day and I love learning new things.

My Shine On message to Tiffany:

Tiffany~ I will never forget the day I got a phone call from you. I knew after talking to you that we were going to be friends. I am thankful for your dedication to everything you do.

Here are a few more reasons that you help me Shine On:

🌟You have a good attitude on everything you do. I appreciate your “GO TO IT ATTITUDE.”
🌟If you set your mind to something, it is going to get done.  I admire that. We all need to have that mind set.
🌟You are a good wife, mom and daughter.
🌟Your a hard worker and it shows.
🌟You are a good example of a COWGIRL. I mean I don’t know ANYONE that can produce a rodeo, be on a ranch rodeo team, have your kids running around and take pictures and still stay calm. Being a Cowgirl is more than the clothes that you wear and I believe that you are a excellent example of a true Cowgirl.
🌟I love your western story. I love that you share it. Keep up the good work.
🌟Surround yourself with people who make you hungry for life, touch your heart, and nourish your soul.

My message to you, dear friend is Shine On!!
Thank you for just being YOU!

A Sunday Thought~ Speak a Blessing

A Sunday Thought~ Speak a Blessing

Blessings, Ranch Life, Ranch Mom, Kids,
Dear God. Please never let me be to busy to recognize your
blessings or never let me be to busy to hear your voice.
My thoughts this past week have been on words that we speak.
Negative words can destroy us.
Negative actions can destroy an attitude.
Ever feel that way?

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
Proverbs 25:11

Talking negative about someone and then expecting them to be blessed can not happen. In that regard, we often find our selves being too harsh and find faults with our children and loved ones. Our negative words and/or actions can cause those around us to lose the sense of value that God has placed with them and in doing that, cause our enemy to bring all kinds of insecurities and/or struggles in their lives.
Have you ever thought about that?  Well I will be honest with you all. I am guilty.
I am guilty but I am asking God to help me.
I thought, I prayed and read the Bible. I don’t want those around me to feel inferior to me. I don’t want those around me to be unsure about themselves.  I want to help them. I want them to be the best that they can be.  I aim to do better.  Will you join me?
I was thinking about our kids.
What am I passing on to them?
Honesty, Love, Compassion and Caring are just a few things I want them to have.
But I can not just think about it, I have to vocalize it.  I have to show it in my life.
Blessings are not blessings until they are spoken.
I love you.
I believe in you.
You are awesome.
You are amazing.
I have faith in you.

I want to talk about MY blessings more than my burdens.

This week and the weeks to come, I want those around me to feel the love. I want those around me to see Godly actions. I want those around me to feel a positive feeling.
Blessings to you all.
Good day!!

Shine On Series #6
Shine On, Shine On was the subject of a blog that I did a couple months ago. Did you see it? If not, here is the link Shine On, Shine On!  I have decided that there are a lot of people that help me “Shine” and I am going to feature them on my Shine On, Shine On series.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a mom, a wife, a health and fitness coach, blogger, ultrasound technologist, and a La Leche League Leader. I am a small-town Nebraska girl. A runner. An empowerer. A friend. I wear many hats but I love all of these roles!

What does your daily routine look like?
I work two days a week outside of the home–a career that I still love.
But the other five days go like this:
We are early risers at our house (not by choice). So I typically am up by 5am so I can get in a little writing and get my workout done before my kids wake up.
And coffee. Coffee first!!
Then I make breakfast for the two kiddos. Our days are filled with play, errands, outside play, working in the garden, running, baking and cooking, reading, cleaning, taking care of the farm animals, and three times a week I instruct a group exercise class called PiYo Live.

What inspires you to be you?
I am inspired by my mom, who is the hardest worker I know and raised five children while never complaining. I am inspired by other strong women who have similar roles or jobs.  Mostly though I see my friends being amazing women–raising kids, keeping their houses up, working full-time jobs and raising kids, having strong faith, going through hardships, reaching career, personal, or fitness goals, basically just kicking butt at this thing called life, and I am happy to be surrounded by these women. You become like those you surround yourself with I think.

What do we all need more of?
More self-confidence, more self-love.
Not in the vain way, but in a way that means we can be comfortable with our choices and ourselves. Society is so good at making us feel judged, or telling us all the ways we are doing things wrong. So I think it goes back to surrounding yourself with more of those positive friends who can be affirming and supportive of all the hardships we face as women and as moms.

What do we all need less of?
Busy-ness! I know this might seem contradicting to what it sounds like my life is like, but a few days ago I found myself looking at our summer schedule and I had it so full that it looked like we wouldn’t have a single free day for almost three weeks–when would we make it to the lake or pool?!?! So I had to sit down and re-evaluate and re-prioritize. I took a few of the less-important things off the calendar. Again, society is starting to applaud “busy-ness” and I think that’s a shame. Kids need to be kids, and adults need to learn that the only “prize” for who has the craziest schedule is burn-out, and crabby parents, and kids who are not actually getting any benefit from that pace of a schedule.

Do you have any advice for ranch wives or any women?
Don’t compare! It’s just like the saying goes–it will steal your joy!
You can wake up happy with your life, but then look at social media or a magazine and see seemingly beautiful pictures of someone else’s house, or vacation, or body, or kids, and suddenly you are angry that YOU don’t have that. My advice is that you have to remember that social media is just the highlights of someone’s life. A picture of someone’s new car or new expensive hand-bag doesn’t show you their struggle with depression, or that they are having marital issues, or that someone they love is fighting cancer, or any number of struggles we all face. So only try to be better than YOU were yesterday. Don’t compare yourself or your life to anyone else’s.

How do you stay so motivated?
Well, when it comes to health and fitness, this is what I say: motivation is a myth!!

It won’t get you off the couch. It won’t force you to put on your running shoes, or your yoga pants. It won’t drive you to the gym. WE have to create the motivation. So my kids, and the thought of where I want to be one month from now, one year, ten years from now, reminds me what I am working for. We make choices every day–your choices either get you closer to your goals, or farther away. Every food you choose to put in your mouth makes you healthier, or less healthy. You get to choose.

So I choose to exercise for 30 minutes a day. I choose to eat mostly healthy food. You can’t get to your goals without working for them. I am choosing to show my kids, who are my world, that I am worth the effort. Because they deserve the best of me.
So I guess it is the same with anything you are pursuing in your life. You get to make the choice whether or not you work towards a goal–whether that be to finish your degree, save for a vacation, or lose weight.

Shine On Series #5

Shine On, Shine On was the subject of a blog that I did a couple weeks ago. Did you see it? If not, here is the link Shine On, Shine On!  I have decided that there are a lot of people that help me “Shine” and I am going to feature them on my Shine On, Shine On series.

Today’s Shine On features: Katie Childers

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m just a small town girl. I was born in Colorado, but all my memories began after moving to Nebraska at the age of three. You see I’m a Railroaders daughter and that’s what brought my family from the crazy city to the good life! The youngest of three girls I grew up playing all sports. The one I excelled most at was track, my little legs moved pretty fast. Even though I enjoyed these activities my true love was for animals, horses in particular. One time when I was just a young girl I remember trying to do a deal with a local rancher, is trade him my two sisters for just one horse! He was all about it except he thought my parents wouldn’t go for it, shoot! While in middle school I had a young boy catch my eye and capture my heart. We continued to date throughout high school. A bonus to this young boy was the fact that he lived in the country, had all his life, and had horses! Shortly after graduating high school we wound up moving into the middle of no where together, thanks to my good friend Naomi lining us up with this little house on the prarie. Those were the years! I took a position as a dental assistant at Alliance Dental Clinic 2001 and I’m still there to this day. Then in April of 2002 I married that young farm boy that had captured my heart years prior. Followed by our first born in 2005, a beautiful daughter, Delaney Jo. She was and is perfect in every sense! Four years later God heard our prayers and answered them by blessing us once again with not one but two healthy baby boys, TWINS Jett and Coy! Our hands were full at that time, but our hearts were even fuller!💕

What does your daily routines look like?

Our days as a family are extremely busy, there never seems to be enough hours in a day. Monday through Wednesday are the days I work at the dental clinic. So we rise and shine early, Jimmy is the first out the door so he tends to miss out on all the chaos that takes place getting the three kidos up, dressed, fed, teeth brushed of course, backpacks on, and out the door “on time”! Followed by me driving 9-0 to town. Most days I feel like a race car driver, scary but true! I hit the school around 7:45, pull up in the carpool line and drop my three little ducklings out 1,2,3! From there I head off to work. The day starts at 8 am sharp, filled with fillings, root canals, tooth extractions, flying saliva, the possibilities are endless! On these three days I look forward to 5:30, don’t get me wrong I enjoy what I do, but there is just so much waiting at home for me! I walk through the door anywhere between 5:45 & 6 o’clock. Just in time to start cooking dinner, sort out a 5th graders homework(thank goodness for Google), feed my family, clean up the kitchen, get three in the shower, try fit in some “snuggle time” as my boys call it before I put them to bed, only to finish the remainder of necessities- lunches, a load of laundry to keep somewhat caught up, etc. If I’m lucky once all are asleep I try to sit and collect my thoughts for the day prior to going to bed and starting it all again the following day. I’m thankful for my job but equally thankful that it’s just three days a week. Thursday through Friday allow me the necessary time while the kids are in school to get my house in order, continue laundry, and help out with the livestock. You see my farm boy cares for all our livestock everyday all the time, so on my days “off” I try my best to lend a hand and help by doing chores. Thursday’s right now tend to be my busiest of days- pick the twins up from school @ 3:20, pick Delaney up from school @ 5, run her to guitar from 5-5:30, then off to livestock judging from 6-8. I sometimes feel as thou I should slap a taxi sign on the side of my ride, as all you other mothers out there can relate. Before you know it through various activities, birthday parties, an occasional mom & dad night out, it’s Sunday evening and my Monday blues set in and it’s time to do it all over again! It’s extremely busy and our heads are spinning and at times we are heading in two different directions, but I will say my farm boy and I make a great team and together we get through it.

What inspires you to be you?
My parents, my husband, and my three children are my inspiration in life. As far as my parents go I feel that by being a good person, wife, and mother,  it just solidifies what a good job they did in raising me. For my husband and kids they are my life and there’s not one thing I wouldn’t do for them and I feel it is so important with kids these days to lead by example!

I feel that wives in general these days need to be more supportive of one another. I don’t know what it is about women or what makes us decide it’s easier to tear other woman down, or to criticize her, or to make yourself out to be better than she is just makes no sense to me. We as women, are much smarter than this. We should know that if we stand together and stick up for one another, support each other, things will turn out to be much more positive! For those that are less than supportive,  I just feel it’s easier to take the high road instead of stooping down to their level. We need to keep our head on our shoulders, too many nowadays go crazy! If they sat back and looked at the decisions that they were making I believe that they would realize it themselves prior to doing so. There are other ways to deal with the stresses of life without going off the deep end! Love, support, and understanding that’s what we need!

How do you stay so motivated?
One of my most favorite sayings is Ever Day Is A Gift Not A Given!  We are truly blessed and should really make the most of the time we have with our loved ones. What we are actually doing is making memories every  day that we are here and for the most part we are in control of whether they are positive ones or not.

Thanks for your friendship, constant support, and love over all these years. You and your family are a blessing in my families lives!Just another reason to be thankful for. 😘

My Shine On message to Katie-

Katie~ I am thankful for your dedication to everything you do. I appreciate your friendship and You.
I will never forget our college days when we laughed, we cried and we made plans to save the world. Right? How about our days of working at Country General? We learned a thing or two about life.

Here are a few reasons that you help me Shine On:

*You are an inspiration to me, even when your OCD is working!!!
*You are a good wife, mom, and daughter.
*You are beautiful inside and out.
*You appreciate differences in people. We are not all the same and that is ok.
*You have faith in me. I appreciate your phone calls and visits!
*You are a hard worker.
*You are only a phone call or text away!
*You understand twin mom problems!!

My message to you, dear friend is Shine On!!
Thank you for never giving up on me.
Thank you for always supporting me.
Thank you for just being YOU!

A Sunday Thought~ Prayer Power

A Sunday Thought~ Prayer Power

I find it really awesome when someone prays for you without

you knowing. I don’t think there is any form of deeper and purer love.

Continue in prayer, and watch in the same thanksgiving;
Colossians 4:2

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made know unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and mind through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

Have you ever prayed for something for a long time and never got any answers?
Have you ever prayed for a friend for a long time and they never changed?
Have you ever thought about giving up on prayer?

I won’t lie, I have thought about giving up on prayer. I have had thoughts of quitting. This week I have been thinking about Prayer Power.

Prayer Power is when you don’t give up. Just because God doesn’t answer all of our prayers doesn’t mean that he doesn’t care about us. It just shows that he cares more by giving us what will be the best for us in the end, even though we don’t understand it now.

Prayer Power is praying for that friend.

Prayer Power is to see the best in those around us, a heart that will forgive, a mind that forgets the worst, and a soul that never loses faith.

Prayer Power is praying for peace. God has a plan for all of us. He will give us his answers when the time is right, and we need to remember that everyday.

Too often I want to immediate action in response to my prayers, but God sometimes answers “NO” or “Not Yet.” This is a test of our faith. It is a test of willingness to accept God for his answers that I don’t understand.

My prayer:
Listening God, grant to me the patience to wait for your answers and the power to accept it with thanksgiving.

Note to my Friends~
Keep Praying. Prayer is the most important conversation of our days. Take it to God before anyone else.
Keep Trying.
Stay Positive.
Be Awesome.
Become Better.

Sunday Thought~Human Nature

Sunday Thought~Human Nature

“We make a serious mistake by noticing

only the human nature of one another

and then failing to see God’s hand working

through those He has called.”

-Elder M. Russell Ballard

I’ve enjoyed Proverbs 3:5 & 6 this week.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Our human nature has a voracious appetite to ‘understand’ things.  To be able to get our minds around the ‘why’s’ in life…relationships, business, doctrine, etc… But understanding alone will never bring us peace.  Solomon was considered one of the wisest men in history…understood more than most, but it never led him to peace.  Rather than fulfillment he found futility and lost his faith late in life.  It gives such confirmation to why God said trust ME…not your understanding.  Don’t look for mastery on our own…look to the Master.

This past week my thoughts have been a little scattered. It was a busy week, and I was on the road a lot; roads that were snowy, slippery and icy. I got a lot of praying in and I had a ton of thoughts.

Have you ever had a week where you weren’t home much, and it seemed like God wanted you to get your thoughts in order?  That is what happened to me last week.  I had several things I was dealing with in relationships, with my kids, etc. When I try to figure them out on my own I just get confused, frustrated, sad and angry etc. When I rest in the arms of my master and read his word I can breath and relax!

Verse 13 in John 15 came to mind a lot;
Greater love hath no man this this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
I am thankful for a friend above us that laid his life down for me. We as humans, seem to forget that life will be better if we help each other out. Last week was a true testament to me. I need to be a better friend, I need to understand God’s way better.

I understand that I have work to do.
I understand that we all need to look to our Master.
I understand that I need to be a better friend.
I understand that I need to trust in the Lord at ALL times!

Happy Monday, Dear Friends!!

Shine On Series #4

Shine On, Shine On was the subject of a blog that I did a couple weeks ago. Did you see it? If not, here is the link Shine On, Shine On!  I have decided that there are a lot of people that help me “Shine” and I am going to feature them on my Shine On, Shine On series.

Today’s Shine On features: Jennifer Denison

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I was born in Colorado Springs in May of 1973 and grew up in the small town of Woodland Park, Colorado, about 20 miles west of Colorado Springs. My dad was a cowboy and outdoorsman, and always had a couple of horses and mules around he used mostly for hunting and trapping and the occasional branding. I spent most of my weekends with him when I was little while my mom worked, and gained a huge appreciation for horses, wildlife and the outdoors.

Even though I was around horses when I was little, I explored other things such as dance, piano, painting and Girl Scouts before I decided I wanted to ride. My parents never pushed me into anything, but my dad always wanted me to ride. When I was 12 years old, he took me to our local PRCA rodeo as he did every year. I remember watching Kelly Yates running barrels and turning to him and saying, “Dad, that’s what I want to do.” The next week he brought home a grade roan mare for me to try.

From that point my family’s life revolved around hauling me to rodeos and 4-H clinics, shows and fairs. At the same time, though, I became interested in writing and photography. In high school I had a wonderful journalism and photography teacher who took extra time helping me reach my goals as writing and photographing professionally and becoming yearbook editor. I wrote a cowboy-related column in our local newspaper for a few years and seized any opportunity to take portraits of friends and at rodeos.

I attended college at Colorado State University, where I double-majored in Technical Journalism and Equine Science in pursuit of working for a horse magazine, breed association or in public relations. I also continued to barrel race. In 1994, when I was a sophomore in college, I received a scholarship from the American Horse Publications, the umbrella organization for equine publishing. They flew me to Lexington, Kentucky, for their annual conference and I met editors, publishers and writers from all of the major horse magazines. Of course, my dad had to go with me to check it out.

Winning that AHP scholarship directed my focus toward writing and photographing for equine publications, and I worked hard throughout college to establish connections and get as much experience as I could before I graduated. I spent most of my winter and summer breaks from college doing internships at Horse & Rider and Western Styles magazines, which were located in Denver, Colorado, at the time. My efforts paid off when I graduated in December of 1995 and landed my first professional writing job as assistant editor of Horse & Rider magazine.

I married into a ranching family in 1996. My interests shifted from the arena to riding on the ranch as often as my budding career allowed. I continued on that path and working for Horse & Rider for more than 6 years where I advanced to senior editor.

In 2002, I was hired by Western Horseman magazine, which was based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the time. Growing up in the area, I always knew about the magazine and remember driving by the beautiful office building, inspired by the architecture of the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and thinking how cool it would be to work there. In college, I won a writing award through a livestock journal for a ranch story I wrote. Feeling pretty confident, I sent the article to Western Horseman’s longtime editor for critique. She returned it with red marks all over it, so I knew I had some work yet to do before I worked for a magazine like Western Horseman.

March will mark my 14th year with Western Horseman where I am senior editor.

I’ve worked for the following publications: Horse & Rider, Western Horseman, Barrel Horse News (short stint as editor), Equestrian Retailer and Western Lifestyle Retailer (both business-to-business publications published by Morris Communications, the parent company of Western Horseman).

I divorced in 2011 and have since dedicated myself to my horses, career and helping my parents, who live nearby.

I have won several AHP awards for my writing.

I have three horses, and two mules that were my dad’s. My main mount is Habanero Pepper, aka Romeo, who I ride mostly in the woods in the same tradition as my dad. I have interests in improving my horsemanship and roping, as well as learning about bridle horse traditions.

What inspires you to be you?

I have a deep appreciation for horses, ranching traditions and progressive management, and all facets of the West and cowboy culture, from Western art to craftsmanship to music. These things consume my thoughts and emotions, and have fostered so many friendships. Telling the stories of people involved in this lifestyle in an accurate and authentic way gives me purpose and is a huge part of who I am. I want to document this time in the West and the people and places who are shaping it. That inspires me everyday.

What do we all need more of?
1. Road trips: To see and experience different cultures and lifestyles, try new foods and drinks, meet interesting people, take in spectacular and diverse scenery and see what’s out there when you get off the pavement.

2. Less ego and pretense and more open-minded sharing, collaboration and kindness. So many issues could be resolved if people could put aside their egos and differences, consider other perspectives and just work together.

3. Farmer’s markets and local butchers: What better way to support local farmers and ranchers, provide healthy foods for the public and get them out of the grocery stores, where they think their food is “made.”

4. Time outdoors: Everyone, including me, needs to get away from our electronic devices, and spend more time outdoors just observing, listening and thinking about things that really matter without distraction.

What do we all need less of?
Distraction, disrespect, judgement, idyllic views of how we should be and live, and politics. I despise politics.

Do you have any advice for ranch wives or any women?
Do not just exist in life or in the shadow of others; be bold, brave and true to you. I’ve learned it’s okay to be kind to and take care of yourself. Take time to try something new or do something you love. Supper, laundry and house-cleaning can wait; trust me, they won’t go anywhere and if everyone gets hungry enough they’ll get a snack or fix their own. I believe it’s important to have realistic goals and dreams, and they can be simple. The important thing is to follow through. Time is ticking, and everyday is a new chance to be who you want to be and do what you want to do.

How do you stay so motivated?
I’ve worked hard to get to this point in my career and have had to put some personal interests aside to get there, and there’s no stopping now. I love words and storytelling and finding the best way I can to introduce readers to the people, horses and lifestyle I respect so much. I also value Western Horseman’s 80-year history of chronicling stock horses, rodeo, talented horsemen, Western art and craft, and interesting people and places in the West. The magazine has be a staple in so many homes and influenced so many horse people. To have a part in producing educational and entertaining content about the horse industry and cowboy culture is a responsibility I take seriously, and it drives me every day  in just about everything I do personally and professionally.

My Shine On message to Jennifer-

*You are interested in others. I appreciate all your work in keeping the West alive.

Shine On Series #3

Shine On, Shine On was the subject of a blog that I did a couple weeks ago. Did you see it? If not, here is the link Shine On, Shine On!  I have decided that there are a lot of people that help me “Shine” and I am going to feature them on my Shine On, Shine On series.

Today’s Shine On features: Alishia Intermill

Tell us a bit about yourself.

We moved to Nebraska three years ago. I moved a lot growing up we lived in Montana, Idaho, California, Quebec Canada, Georgia, Wyoming and now Nebraska. My husband, Cody and our 2 girls, Paisley and Addi, live on our families ranch, south of Alliance, Nebraska.  Cody and I have been married for 2 years. I work part time as a Dental Hygienist.

What does your daily routine(s) look like?

We usually get up, get the kids breakfast, have coffee and then we head out side to help Cody with chores or play. We head to preschool and work on Wednesday and Thursday’s.

What inspires you to be you?

My mom and dad have inspired me to be me. They are both some of the most loving people I know and are always willing to take care of others. They have a weakness for children and that has passed on to me.

What do we all need more of?

We all need to be more understanding of other people’s battles that we may not see.

What do we all need less of?

We all need less media. I feel like the media can be toxic to our thoughts and feelings. It’s hard to find a balance because media is a necessity of our daily lives today.

Do you have any advice for ranch wives or any women?

I just moved to the ranch three years ago and it has taught  me how to slow down and focus more on my family and friends and less on material things like money. Becoming a ranch wife was a scary and exciting dream for me, I grew up watching westerns and wanting to live on a ranch. It has had its challenges but the rewards are amazing! My favorite time is calving. It comes with long days and hard work but watching all the calves run around and play, like kids make my heart full!

How do you stay so motivated?

I stay motivated because my husband and I,  now share a goal of wanting to raise our kids on a ranch and teach the values that comes with ranching. Hard work pays off, not just on money.

The only other thing I would add is I love other ranch wife’s. They understand your frustrations and understand your joys.  They make traded work days fun and enjoyable!

My Shine On message to Alishia-

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24

Alishia~ I am thankful for your friendship and You.

Here are a few reasons that you help me Shine On:

*You are a good listener and only a phone call away!!
*You are always positive. I really appreciate that you always see the Best in everyone and everything.
*You are open and honest.
*You are a good mom, wife and good friend.
*You are beautiful inside and out.
*You married a Cody!! 🙂
*You are willing.
*You make me feel special.
*You also share what you have in your heart.
*You are honest.
*You accept me as I am.

My message to you, dear friend is Shine On!!
Thank you for being strong when I was a little weak. Thank you for only being a phone call away. I truly am thankful for you.

Happy Birthday, dear Friend.

Shine On Series #2

Shine On, Shine On was the subject of a blog that I did a couple weeks ago. Did you see it? If not, here is the link Shine On, Shine On!  I have decided that there are a lot of people that help me “Shine” and I am going to feature them on my Shine On, Shine On series.

Meet Christine Mulloy.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I grew up in Paramus, New Jeresey. I moved out to Colorado when I was 18 to attend Colorado Christian University. I graduated in May 2004, with a Bachelors of Arts in History and a license to teach the social sciences in grades 7-12. I took my first teaching job in Rapid City, South Dakota in the Fall of 2004. I taught all the history classes for grades 8 to 12, coached cheerleading and headed up student council. I was busy, which might be an understatement. I was proposed to by Coote Mulloy in October of 2004 and was married June 18, 2005. As soon as we were married, we moved to Scottsbluff, Nebraska and I took a job at Gering Junior High School, where I taught for three years. We moved to Chadron in 2008 and I finished my Masters Degree in History and a thesis on the First Amendment “Establishment Clause”, which deals with religion. I have been married for 10 years now and we have five children. After child number three was born, we moved home to my husband’s family ranch, which is a cow/calf operation. I worked under Naomi Loomis at Double A Feed Store for a couple of years, but now stay home full time and home school my children. My husband and I are active in our church in the nursery and with children’s church. We feel called to marriage ministry and teach a marriage class twice a year and counsel with couples who want Godly wisdom for their marriages and premarital counseling.

What does your daily routine look like?

Every morning when I get up, I feed the children and have them help clean up and get dressed. Before they can play or turn the TV on, we have to do their school work and chores. Usually we can finish by lunch. This frees our afternoons to go to town for music lessons, helping on the ranch, or other family and church activities. Right now, we also drive to Cheyenne, Wyoming once a week for eye therapy for my oldest daughter, and meet once a week with other homeschooling families to have school together and share a meal together. I often cook for family or neighbors who come to help on our ranch. I have learned to enjoy cooking for large groups! We always seem to have quite a few visitors as well, including friends, family, hunters, and travelers. My mother says my front door is a revolving door. My husband and I like it that way!

What inspires you to be you?

My inspiration comes from God and His Word. I also enjoy reading, and talking with my mother and mother-in-law, and a few close friends about life. I believe Godly counsel is very important!

What do ranch wives need more of?

We need more time in the Word of God. It’s easy to get caught up in all that needs accomplished on the ranch. Life is work out here and we work hard everyday! We need to remember the work will be there tomorrow and Christ needs to come first. (I need to remind myself of that all the time!)

What do ranch wives need less of?

Negative thought. We need to rid ourselves of negative thought about our husbands, children, relationships and most importantly, about ourselves.

Do you have any advice for ranch wives or any women?

Find your value in God alone. It’s too large of a burden to place on your husband or any friendship, and it’s not theirs to carry anyway.
Remember: Marriage is not to make you happy, it’s to make you more Christ-like.

How do you stay so motivated?

Staying in the Word of God; continually reading the Bible and posting verses around the house so I can read and pray even when I’m doing dishes and laundry!

My Shine On message to Christine:

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpenth the countenance of his friend.
Proverbs 27:17

Christine~ I sure am glad that you chose to be my friend.

These are the reasons you make me Shine On,

~You’re are trustworthy.
~You’re honest.
~You have empathy.
~You are a good listener.
~You are supportive.
~You are self-confident.
~You are fun to be around.
~You are a good example.
~You are a good wife, a good mother and a good friend.
~You accept me for who I am.
~You are beautiful inside and out.

My message to You………Shine On. Thank you for being one of my best friends.  Thank you for showing me that life is better when we are Godly. Thank you for always listening to me. Thank you for all your encouragement. Thank you for “being there.”  I truly am thankful for you.

A Sunday Thought~Shine On, Shine On!!

Shine On, Shine On!

Shine on. Do what makes your Soul
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let you light so shine before men, that they may see your good works. and glorify you Father which is in heaven.
Matt 5:14-16
This past week I have been on a quest to be a happier person.
I have been praying and reading about the light.
I have been praying for peace. Here is what I have figured out so far:We get into Habits.  What I mean is that we get into the social media habit; looking at everyone else’s life and then we compare it to our own. Right? We are all guilty of it. I find my mind wondering off on judgments, expectations, worries, resentments and what should or shouldn’t happen. Do you?

These habits cause our own lights to be dull or even burn out.

We have anxious thoughts. These thoughts squash our enthusiasm and feed our insecurities, they close down opportunities and don’t allow us to go out side our comfort zone.

These habits cause our own lights to be dull or even burn out.

We don’t pay enough attention to our feelings. Feelings are really powerful. It is important to know the difference between good feelings and bad feelings.  I find my self over worrying and I find myself lock up with fear and tension; these are bad. Love and care are good feelings. It really is unnecessary to have bad feelings. When we let go of the bad feelings, our light can shine.

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
2 Cor. 10: 5

These habits cause our own light to be dull or even burn out.

This is all going to take time. Things don’t change overnight, but with care, love and diligence to worrying, our healthy habits,  and our happy thoughts; we can all shine on.

This week I am focusing on my shine and I want you to join me.
You, yes I am talking to you, you make my light shine brighter.
How, you ask.
Because you are reading this and that my friends, make my light shine brighter.

Will you join me on my mission to Shine On?Happy Monday, dear Friends.

I want to make each day better for everyone
around me. I am on a mission to Shine On.

A Sunday Thought~I am Grateful for……………

I am Grateful for………………………..

Gratitude begins when my sense of entitlement ends. (Photo Credit to Cary Leithead)
I am thankful for times like this. I get to gather a few thoughts that seem to wonder away.

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Colossians 3:15

My Sunday thought is about being Grateful.  This past week has reminded me that I need to be more grateful and so I wrote a list.

I am Grateful for……………………

A husband – A partner that makes me want to be a better person.
A messy house – our kids making memories.
A pile of laundry – we have clothes.
A pasture full of cattle – a job.
A sink full of dishes – we will not starve.
A day full of questions – our kids are learning.
A sun rise – early mornings.
A friend – someone to listen.
A horse – a soul refresher.
A long dirt road – clear your head.
A camera – photo albums full of memories.
A dream – a goal that we can aim to.
A lesson learned – never quit trying.
A blessing – bigger than a burden.
A life – so  that I can be better than I was yesterday.
A Bible – God is always near.

My list could go on, but I think I will stop.
Today I am grateful that God knows my heart.
Others may not understand my good intentions, they may judge me, my words, or my deeds, they may find faults or blame me because they don’t understand but, God knows my heart and he knows that I am learning.

I am grateful for prayers. I am a work in progress. I am trying to be more like he created me to be.

Happy Monday, dear friends.  I am thankful for all of you that read my blog.

A Sunday Thought from the Circle L~Friends

A Sunday Thought from the Circle L~Friends!

Be with those that bring the best in you, not the stress in you.
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 17:17

I have been thinking a about what it takes to be a friend.
In Proverbs, it says that a friend loveth at all times. I fall short of this everyday.  This week I am aiming to be a better friend.  In fact, I have been praying that God helps me to be a better friend. I have been praying that I am more like him.  He is a better friend to me than I am to him and I want to change that.

To be a good friend:

To be a good friend, I think that we need to be Real. God knows us inside and out, but do our friends? I believe it is better to be disliked for who we are, than to be liked for who we aren’t.

To be a good friend, we need to be Honest. We already know what happens to dishonest people. We need to be honest with our friends and with God.

To be a good friend, we need to be Loyal.

To be a good friend, we need to be Respectful. We all have secrets, right? God keeps our secrets, we need to keep our friends’ secrets.

To be a good friend, we need to Care. God cares and we need to also. We need to be there in a crisis.

To be a good friend, we need to give Perspective. Advise, not judgement. Let God be the judge and let us suggest.

To be a good friend, we need to give Space. God gives us space. All the space we need.  Friends need space as well.

To be a good friend, we need to Share. We need to be selfless.

To be a good friend, we need to be able to Apologize and Forgive. God forgives us for all our sins. We need to apologize. We also need to forgive.

My prayer this week is just to be a better friend.  A better friend to God and a better friend to you.

Happy Monday, dear friends.  How can I be a better friend to you?
