Why Mentoring our Youth Matters.

Why Mentoring our Youth Matters.

Who has had a lasting impact in your life?

Who do you credit with helping you get to where you are today?

Maybe it was a teacher, an older cousin, a coach, a neighbor, a friend, or an extended family member.

For me, it was a teacher that believed in me. She knew that I would make a difference and she pushed me to become a better person. I always looked for her approval and I still think to my self, ” Would Mrs. D approve?”  I can still, to this day, hear her saying, “Naomi, when you make decisions, make sure that you are using your head.”

This, my friends, is the power of mentor. A year ago, I started in the Teammates program at our school and I am thankful that I did. A while back, I had a conversation with a friend. I was explaining to her that I loved being a mentor. “You need to share your story,” she said.

This post has everything that I think you need to know about being a mentor. So without further ado……….

Here are my two cents about being a mentor and why it matters.

The Impact that Mentoring can do.

Have you ever asked someone about their success story?

I am betting that their answer will be that they had a mentor. Whether it’s professional, personal, or spiritual, mentoring is often a great motivation for growth and accomplishments. Mentors offer steady support, hope, wise guidance, experience and encouragement.

“Show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who had real positive influences in his or her life. I don’t care what you do for a living — if you do it well I’m sure there was someone cheering you on or showing the way. A mentor.” — Denzel Washington

According to research, there is a huge improvement in mentees that have a mentor. Research has seen improvements in mentee’s academic performance and a reduction in days absence from school along with reduction in disciplinary referrals.

Check this graph out about the research.

Studies point to increases in confidence and performance as well as decreases in risky behavior in students who are mentored.

*Girls with a mentor are two and half times more likely to be confident in their academic performance. Boys with a mentor are three times less likely to suffer peer pressure and anxiety, and two times less likely to develop negative behaviors.
*A mentor increases a student’s likelihood of attending college by 50 percent. Teacher mentorship nearly doubles the odds of a student attending college.
*Youth in a mentor program are 46 percent less likely to use drugs and 27 percent less likely to use alcohol.

“The impact of a TeamMates mentor on the mentee is profound, with the majority seeing improvements in their academic performance and a reduction in the number of unexcused absences and disciplinary referrals.” (Teammates.org)

I know that mentoring can improve academic performance, school attendance, graduation rates, and attitudes. But, the power of a being a mentor runs deeper than any numbers that I can find. Words of empowerment — “I believe in you,” “you’re worthy of this opportunity,” “I think you have what it takes,” “it’s okay to try and fail,” “keep trying,” “your awesome,” “you did a great job,” — all help recognize and unleash a mentee’s potential, which I know can change their course in life.

Why I became a Mentor.

Above I stated research studies that point out the impacts of being a mentor, but I have to tell you that I didn’t even read those when I signed up to be a mentor. I just knew that I wanted to make a difference in a student’s life. Can you make time every week to make a difference in someone’s life? I guarantee that the benefits of being a mentor will out weigh any inconveniences that you may have.

I became a mentor because I wanted to invest in others. I wanted to give back to our youth in our community. I believe the most impactful way to improve our community is my spending time investing in the next generation. One of the most effective ways to give back to your community is not necessarily money – it’s time.

I became a mentor because I wanted to help a youth realize their potential. I wanted to bring out their unique talents and gifts and then celebrate with them when they reach their goals.

I became a mentor to learn more about myself. Yep, you read that right. Great relationships are two-way streets. Right? Being a mentor has taught me more about my strengths and my weaknesses. It has taught that its OK to share our experiences and beliefs with someone else.

I became a mentor to change someone’s life. I wanted to share my power of life in someone else’s life-in particular, a youth. I wanted to be a positive impact on a youth’s life.

I became a mentor so that I could be a better leader. I believe that investing in someone’s life challenges our perspectives in our lives, it makes our interpersonal skills better and exposes you to the other side of the street. I believe that mentoring gives you the opportunity to learn by doing.

Benefits that I have received since being a Mentor.

The benefits that I have received since being a mentor have been more than I can ever put into words. The impact of making a difference in a person’s life is very humbling. This is what I have witnessed:

I made a positive impact on a youth. When your mentee sees that someone really does care about them because they want to rather than because they have to, they start to see their own self worth.

I can see the growth. I can see more confidence. I can see love. I can see more life goals.

I have become a better listener.

Can you be a Mentor?

It takes minimum time for maximum rewards. Being a mentor requires you just one hour a week with your mentee for the school year. Did you read that? It only takes an hour a week!! By investing in a mentee, you will be improving yourself, you will be improving their self esteem, you will be helping them improve their grades and will be encouraging them to set goals and achieve them. Think about this, one hour a week that will last for a very long time.

Want to know more about mentor? Drop a comment and I will get you in contact with a local Team Mate Representative.

When your Father is a Cowboy

When your Father is a Cowboy

When your Father is a Cowboy……. You learn to

In honor of Father’s Day this Sunday, I wrote a quick poem.

When your Father is a Cowboy

When your Father is a Cowboy…………….
You grow up differently than the kids around you.
Your Father teaches you things like changing oil in your pickup or how to rope.
When your Father is a Cowboy…………
He teaches you hard work will pay off.

When your Father is a Cowboy…………….
You learn about life and you learn about death.
You learn how to treat sick animals and you learn
how to skin a deer.
When your Father is a Cowboy…………….
You learn that doing things the right way first is always better.
When your Father is a Cowboy……….
You learn how to fix fence!

When your Father is a Cowboy…………..
You hear stories of wild, bucking horses bucking thru mamas garden.
You hear stories of roping a coyotes or chasing the mean badgers.
When your Father is a Cowboy……………
Your family vacations are picnics at the creek or long cattle drives.
When your Father is a Cowboy………..
You learn to pack a snack or two because you might not be in for lunch.
When your Father is a Cowboy…………..
You hear things like: “Get up. You are wasting God’s daylight.”
When your Father is a Cowboy………….
There is no time to cry.
When your Father is a Cowboy………….
You always have a friend.

When your Father is a Cowboy………….
He teaches you manners and traditions.
When your Father is a Cowboy………..
His hands feel like sand paper.
When your Father is a Cowboy…………
The first vehicle you drove is a tractor!
When your Father is a Cowboy………..
You find yourself more interested in the weather
and the cattle markets then you do the news.
When your Father is a Cowboy………….
You learn when he says, “Will you help me get the cows moved?”
Really means, you will be helping me alllllll day.
When your Father is a Cowboy…………
You learn work ethic at a very early age.
When your Father is a Cowboy………….
You don’t get a wage. You get a pat on the back.
When your Father is a Cowboy………..
You have the best life!
Happy Father’s Day!!
Love Naomi
My dad and my PAPA.

I am thankful everyday for them.

My 5 Favorite Cuts of Beef

My 5 Favorite Cuts of Beef

In honor of Beef Month, I am sharing with you all my 5 favorite cuts of Beef in no particular order. This list not only contains my favorite cut but also a recipes to go with it.

Here it goes:

1. Hamburger aka Ground Beef..
Where I come from, we call ground beef – hamburger. From tacos to grilling, hamburger is served at the Circle L Ranch almost everyday.  Did you know that by law, hamburger aka ground beef, may not contain any added water, fillers or binders?
My helpful hint about hamburger is that I cook a huge batch of hamburger every week, so that I can make quick lunch and/or suppers.

My favorite recipes come from our Chuckwagon:
Circle L’s Vermicelli
Circle L’s Sauerkraut Burgers
Circle L’s Taco Bake
Easy Taco Salad
Circle L’s Baja Bowls
Circle’s Taco Squares
Chugwater Chili
Circle L’s Beef Enchilada Casserole

2. Prime Rib Aka Rib Eye Steak..
This cut of Beef makes my month water just thinking about it. I love a good prime rib steak. The prime rib steak aka rib eye has the most fat compared to the other cuts, which is why it’s such a tender, juicy, and flavorful piece of beef. It can be grilled, broiled, or pan-fried with equally delicious results but my favorite is roasted using Pioneer Women recipe.

My favorite recipe comes from: The Pioneer Women Prime Rib

3. Top Sirloin..
This steak is affordable and very flavorful. It’s a relatively lean cut, without a lot of marbling. Top sirloin is often marinated or pounded to help tenderize it. Like the rib eye steak, it can be cooked in any manner. I like to use cut this steak up in cubs and grill it with fruit and/or vegetables.

My favorite recipe comes from:Traeger Grills. You can use your favorite seasoning but we prefer Chugwater Chili Steak Rub or Tom’s Steak Rub.

4. T-Bone..
Did you know that the T-bone steak is really two steaks in one? The T-shaped bone divides a New York strip steak and a tenderloin filet. I like this steak on the Treager Grill.

My favorite recipe come from: The Pioneer Women. This recipe is amazing on T-bones. I mean how could you go wrong with butter and spices on a hot steak.  Try it!!

5. Flat Iron..
Did you know that this steak was found at the University of Nebraska? I was attending a Nebraska Cattlemen Youth Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska when I got to sample this steak.   It has been on my favorite list since then. It is second in tenderness to the tenderloin steak, the flat iron is well-marbled, richly flavored and juicy. Did you know that there are only 2-4 of these steak on a beef animal?

My favorite recipe come from: Circle L Ranch Kitchen. Cook juicy seasoned steak in the skillet to provide a simple yet flavor-packed crust. The trick to a great crust is to use a very hot skillet; a large cast-iron skillet works best. Rub steak evenly with steak seasoning and salt.
Cook in hot oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat 4 to 5 minutes on each side or to desired degree of doneness.(Make sure that you follow the Beef cooking rules. See Below)  Let stand 5 minutes. Cut diagonally across the grain into thin strips.

This list is my favorites. What are your favorites? They all have their strong points, and if cooked properly, you can’t go wrong with any of them. These comparisons may help you choose the perfect cut the next time you’re planning a steak dinner.

Happy Beef Month from the Circle L Ranch.

Beef Cooking Rules to Follow:When cooking Beef, please follow these rules. For safety, the USDA recommends cooking hamburgers and ground beef mixtures such as meat loaf to 160 °F (71.1 °C) as measured with a food thermometer. Cook all organ and variety meats (such as heart, kidney, liver and tongue) to 160 °F (71.1 °C).Cook all raw beef steaks and roasts to a minimum internal temperature of 145 °F (62.8 °C) as measured with a food thermometer before removing meat from the heat source. For safety and quality, allow meat to rest for at least three minutes before carving or consuming. For reasons of personal preference, consumers may choose to cook meat to higher temperatures. For approximate cooking times for use in meal planning, see the following chart compiled from various resources.Times are based on beef at refrigerator temperature—40 °F (4.4 °C). Remember that appliances and outdoor grills can vary in heat. Use a food thermometer to check for safe cooking and doneness of beef.

We are real ranch moms, life is tough but we are tougher.

Why I love Ranch Moms!

To celebrate Mother’s Day, I decided to write a little about us, Ranch Moms!

Circle L Ranch, Mom
My Mom and I after my adoption was finalized.

She was amazing.

I miss her every day!

Happy Mother’s Day in Heaven, Mom!

Please note: This blog is dedicated not only to ranch moms but to all moms.  I am pretty sure that we can all relate.

Ranch moms are special and hard working.

We have Dirt under nails. Yep, it is true! We don’t have time to go town to get our nails done.

No shower for a day or two.  I hate to admit it but it is TRUE!

We have cleaned up more than our fair share of dog puke, kid puke, cat puke, urine,  manure and blood. Clorox is a wonderful invention. We don’t have time to put cucumbers on our eyes at night.  Our only worry is making sure that we get a little rest.

We have farmer tan lines. Yep, it just happens.  Short sleeves and sun make lines.
We are tough, I mean we can carry 50 pounds plus around.  Taking care of our animals requires a lot of lifting. Most of the time it is 50 pound feed sacks.
We share!  We share our clothes, our personal space, our time and our love.

We know about life and death. New life and death happens on a ranch. New life is amazing and death makes us appreciate life.

We know there is a God.  We see him every day.  Just look up at the skies.
We know how to shoot a gun. One of my first life lessons from my Mom was how to shoot.
We find interesting things in the washer.  From staples to rocks, and other unidentifiable objects!!
We pray a lot. Amen.

We have calloused hands. Working in the weather makes leather hands.
We have scars.  We are proud of them, each one of them has a story.
We shop in bulk. We never know when we will get to town, so buying bulk is a must.

We have tender hearts. Tender hearts are important to maintain care of our families, land, and animals. We may, or may not, use shirt tails to wipe snot!

We have many job titles.  Banker, loan officer, secretary, maid, teacher, bus driver, therapist, barber, vet, coach, truck driver, President and many others.

We know how to cook.  Whether that be Beef, Chicken, Pork or a good desert.  Ranch Moms’ cooking is the best.
Circle L Ranch
Being a Mom is the most rewarding

job that I have.

There are many things that I love and appreciate about ranch moms, they are amazing, loving, strong, happy, selfless and graceful!  Moms are the sunshine in life!

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6

“God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” Psalm 46:5

Happy Mother’s Day!

Banding Etiquette Brandings Circle L Ranch ranch life Rules

Branding Etiquette

Branding Etiquette

Naomi Note: I am taking this post out of archives(2013) and sharing it again. Enjoy!!

I haven’t written a blog for a while, but it’s not a lack of thinking about it.  Somewhere between running after twins, being a mom, being a wife, calving, running a feed store, volunteering for Nebraska Cattlemen, FFA, and Fair board I really don’t have much time.

Today, finally, I have a few moments to write my thoughts down.

I love this time of year! I love seeing all the calves.  Even though this spring has tested our spirit and our strength, I am thankful for the moisture we have had, and love the branding season and the community it brings.

My thoughts are really about Branding Etiquette.

What happens in the branding corral is amazing, and I wanted to write it down.  There is an etiquette in every culture and the branding corral is without exception. I know that I may have missed some, and there may be some you will not agree with, and some you may not have experienced.  I am open for you to share your thoughts with me.  Some rules are spoken, some unspoken.

I will never forget my first Nebraska branding.  I was amazed how well people respected each other, the traditions that had been passed on and just the amazing feeling of being there.

So with that I have decided to write my version of Branding Rules!!

The owner brands the calves.
It’s the top job.  The owner is the boss.  They also delegate who should rope and for how long.  They also delegate who should cut and give shots, etc.  Always wait to be asked to do your job.

It’s an honor to be asked to rope at a branding.
You should respect the other ropers.  Help them out.  Dragging one calf with two roped back feet is better than dragging five with one back leg.  Take your time.  If you can, pull your calf to the wrestlers closest to the branding pot (So branders don’t have to walk so far).  If you high hock a calf, try to get the rope down.

The brander gets first dibs on a calf.
They have a hot iron which cools quickly. Shots and cutting can wait.

You are expected to wrestle at branding if you can.
You should not ever let your calf up until he is done.  Watch for the ropers, don’t stand in their way.

Brandings are really not a place for colts.
(Unless they are ready and won’t get someone hurt)

It is a nice gesture to bring something to the branding for lunch.
Usually a salad or dessert!!

The men/women that helped in the branding corral eat first.

Make sure you thank the lady of the house for lunch.

You are in charge of your own kids at branding.
If you want to rope or help out, then make sure you have someone to watch them if they are not old enough to help themselves.  It would be disrespectful to expect, or even ask the ladies preparing lunch to watch them.

Leave your dogs at home.

I am sure that I have missed some but I wanted to at least give what I was thinking.  I am very blessed to live in a community were there are still traditions and morals.  I am thankful that Cody and I have the opportunity to pass on these to our kids.

I love this picture.  Why? Cause this picture shows the old and the young.

Everyone has a job.

The young and the old.  We all love our PAPA!

Cade branding 2012

Reata and Tripp.  I was wishing this day that I had 3 pairs of Chinks, 3 kids horses and 3 hands.  I was watching our friend’s little boy Tripp, he is 10 days older than the twins.  They all wanted to ride and they all wanted a hat and they all wanted chinks.  So we had a lesson in sharing that day.  I love that they all want to ride.  It makes my heart sing!

Cody and Levi

This is my new horse.  I would not trade him for anything.  We are becoming very good partners!!

He loves to pull calves, and I love to rope them!
This picture shows what goes on at branding.
Talking.  Branding is a time to catch up with your neighbors.  I love to hear all the stories.

This is another picture that I love.  In this picture we have the young and the old. Learning how to hold a calf is so important.  At every branding the kids get a little better and better.

I love that this horse is so calm.  Makes it really easy to rope a calf.

This is our neighbor, John,  He is 81 this year.  He is a 3rd generation cattle rancher.  He told me the other day at his branding that he appreciated me and how I was raising my kids.  My heart needed to hear that.

Ryder.  He loves to ride and he loves his Hat.

This is another picture that I love.  Cody is telling Cade the Rules.  Cade did so good roping.  I was one proud MOM.  To tell you the truth I had tears in my eyes.  They grow up so fast but I glad that we have a new generation of cowboys.

Ryder watching from the fence.

Cade pulling in his calf.
Being with friends is so important!!

I am closing you with a invitation to add your comments.

A Sunday Thought Atmosphere Circle L Ranch faith God Heart Life

How is the Atmosphere in Your Heart?

How is the Atmosphere in Your Heart?

Everyone of our hearts has an atmosphere.
What is the atmosphere like in your heart?

How is the Atmosphere in Your Heart?

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.
To do justice and judgement is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
Proverbs 21:2-3

How do you feel about the world today?
Do you feel like there is a lot of confusion?
Do you feel like there is a decline in civility?
Do see that some people like to display love, but there are some that like to display crass?
What is the atmosphere of your heart?

These questions have been on my heart the last couple of weeks.

The atmosphere of our hearts depends on where and who we allow ourselves to be influenced by, and whatever is in our hearts. We can create an atmosphere of peace or hate. This atmosphere will be what flows in our hearts because it will conducive to what is in our hearts.

You see, we are in our comfort zone when we create whatever is in our hearts and flow in it when it prevails. We can create and contribute to God’s kingdom, or we can create and contribute to the enemy.

Think about this…..

When love rules our hearts, there will be resistance when we try to walk in the atmosphere of evil.  Our spirit of love will be discerned, but not welcome. To resist this atmosphere we must enter to feel a discomfort in our hearts. This feeling is out of our comfort zone. We must set up our atmosphere to see God’s light.

Satan tell us this…..
“If you can’t beat’em, join’em.”
Right? Satan is a very good recruiter. He makes us frustrated and then he wins by us thinking like him. I see it over and over and over. Do you?  He figures that if he has a stronghold in our atmosphere, he can get us to do what ever he wants. I am out to shut him down and I want you to join me.

How ’em I going to do that?

I know that I can change my own spiritual atmosphere around myself quickly by practicing:

Grace:
Cut people some slack instead of cutting them clear off. Be humble and have compassion. Forgive and forget.

Gratitude:
Be thankful for everything that happens whether good or bad. Show gratitude by writing a note or maybe a phone call. Everyday give more complements than complaints.

Generosity:
Give, give and give a little more!! No I am not talking about money. I am talking about time, energy and kindness.

Not only will these things change our attitudes, but if we do these consistently, eventually the principle of sowing and reaping will catch up to us so our life will be full of people doing the same things.

How is the atmosphere in your heart?

Happy Monday!!

A Sunday Thought~To Busy to Pray?

A Sunday Thought~To Busy to Pray?

Dear God, please help me today. Give me strength when I am weak, take my
hand and guide me through today.  Help me up when I have fallen. ~Amen

Have you ever found yourself too busy to pray?
I have!

Have you ever found yourself asking God to to help you relax?
I have!

Have you ever said “Lord, help me shut out the insignificant details?”
O man, I have!

Have you ever prayed, “Lord, help me to slow down and enjoy the day that you have given to me?”
Yep, almost everyday!

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Luke 10:41-42

I feel like Martha most days. I feel my responsibilities push my tendencies to become lazy about praying. Like Martha, I often have too many things on my to do list: ranch work, feed store work, laundry, dishes, chores, cooking, spending quality time with our kids and Cody, spending time with good friends, juggling all the extra things I am involved in.
Prayer time on my knees? O man, I think at that I am failing.

But Jesus talked to Martha, which I believe was to me as well,

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Luke 10:41-42

That “one thing” is connecting and spending time with God.
That “one thing” is sharing our fears, longings, and dreams with God.
That “one thing” is listening for his voice.
That “one thing” is asking for our orders so that we can spend our days doing what he has in store for us to do.

That “one thing” is what I am going to work on.

I know for a fact, that I need his wisdom and guidance.

What really matters in time and eternity?
I want to be more like Mary, I want to discover the “one thing” really worth being concerned about.

My prayer is this:
Help me not to be so busy and distracted doing so many things that I miss the most important thing. The most important thing is time with you. Please teach me today what really matters.

Happy Monday, dear friends!!
Have a Godly day!!

Circle L Ranch Faith Family & Ranching FaithFamilyRanching Ranch House ranch life

You Know You Live in a Ranch House When….

You Know You Live in a Ranch House When….

A little collection of ranch house notes.
The other night while winding down after a long day, I was thinking about our ranch house.
You see, we moved into the Circle L Ranch house about 7 years ago when Cody’s parents retired. This ranch house is our home, and now a part of the story of who we are and a large collection of all the things we love.

After talking to our older generation neighbors, we have come to the conclusion that this ranch house was built before 1910. Our house was a 1 room homestead. The previous owners then added a larger kitchen, a couple of bedrooms and an upstairs.

In 1965, Cody’s parents, Fred and Darlene, bought the Circle L Ranch and in 1979 Cody’s parents added on a living room, bedroom, bathroom and a laundry room. Cody’s parents raised 5 kids in this ranch house.

I came up with a few lines about living in a ranch house.

You Know You Live in a Ranch House When……………..

You can only run a few appliances/ electronics at once.
We are pros at knowing what will flip the breaker. Even with updated wires, this ranch house can only handle so much. If we flip the breaker, we have to run over a hill to flip it back on.

Your bathtub also serves as a calf warmer and dog bathtub.
It also has seen more sand, mud and manure than most houses in its lifetime.

Your refrigerator has 2 shelves/drawers full of vaccinations/ medicine for cattle, dogs and horses.
Yep, you read that right. Vaccine and medications for all our animals is important for us to have on hand at all times.

Your laundry room also serves as a vet room.
Our laundry room is pretty big, it has a shower, a huge sink, a washer, a dryer and large shelves. This room doesn’t only hold dirty and clean clothes, but you can find all vet supplies needed to treat a sick cow or calf, bandage a sore on a horse, animal ID tags, and the list goes on and on. We make sure that we have all the necessities we need because it takes a vet at least an hour to come to the ranch.

Your washer has washed more than clothes.
I will just leave that right there!!!

You have fresh air EVERYDAY!
I mean really, think about all the drafts of fresh air that we get. When Cody and I moved in, we had new windows put in and even though these windows helped with a lot of the drafts, it didn’t stop them all. Let’s just say when the wind blows so do our curtains.

This is just one corner…

Your entry way look like the Calvary came for a visit.
I counted them this morning and we have 30 pairs of boots in the entry way. Whether we need Cowboy boots or Bog Boots, they are ready to go!!

Your fireplace has a place for a wood box.
No, not a box for wood, but a box for a cold calf.

Your kitchen sink washes more than dishes.
For example, calf bottles, calving equipment, dirty kids, etc. Don’t worry, that’s why Clorox was invented.

Your mud room really has mud in it.
And NO I don’t clean it everyday.

Your floors have the creaks.
No really, it is one of the things that I love about ranch houses is the creaking floor. You can hear the kids coming when they get out of their beds.

You have a floor furnace.
Actually I love the floor furnace. It is very convenient to warm your cold feet and dry wet clothes.

Your house has a cellar.
Every old house that I know has a cellar and it is servers as a weather shelter and for food storage. I am thankful to have it.

Your electrical outlets are only 2 pronged.
This is probably one of the things that drive me up the wall, all appliances need 3 pronged outlets. Let me tell you, it is frustrating!

Your front door is the original wood door.
That is all. Our door is heavy and made right and I like it.

Isn’t this a good view? Iron on the hill.

Your lawn ornaments consist of old rusted machinery.
Let’s just say that we have a stock pile of iron.

Your sewer is just a pipe line to a row of old trees.
Our ranch house does have a septic tank which was put in when Cody’s parents added on, but the rest of the house just has a pipe. The good news is that when we have a back up, all we have to do is go dig the dirt away from the pipe.

Your back door serves as the door to the gun safe.
Yes, there are guns by the front door, back door and everywhere in between.

Your walls are insulated with old Levis and Western Shirts!
Yes, you read that right. Back when this house was built insulation consisted of old shirts and jeans. Our walls still have them in it. We put insulation on top of them to help. We also found old newspapers packed in the walls. We left them.

Ranch house hat rack.

Your hat rack is a prized buck.
I will leave it at this: Check the photo out!!

Your floors are hard wood.
Living in the Sandhills, I appreciate our hard wood floors.

You have a clothesline.
Fresh air is the best to dry laundry and I know ours has been drying clothes since the 1900!

Your cook stove is gas.
This is one of the most important items in our ranch house. This is handy when the power is out, we can still have a home cooked supper and boil water if we need to.

Our ranch house is made with beams, walls and lots of stories.
The form of ranch houses never matters as much as what goes inside – because those are the people and special things that transform any space into a home. Ranch houses not only house and protect people from the elements, but they tell a story, express a person or family’s interests and make guests feel welcome.

Ranch houses are originals and they all have character.

You are welcome to come visit our ranch house anytime.

Today, March 8 is a special day. Not only is it my BIRTH-Day, it is also International Women’s Day 2017.  I wanted to do a SHOUT – OUT to all Women, but I want to do a special SHOUT-OUT to all Women in Ag.

Did you know that women involvement in Ag is growing?
Whether they are ranchers, farmers, mom operators, or maybe even a combination of all, women in Ag are special people.
I wrote a poem about these special people.

Let’s celebrate with a CHEER! and a Poem!

Women is Ag is an attitude, really; a pioneer spirit, a Special American brand of Courage.
Women in Ag face life head on, she shines her own lights and has no excuses.
Women in Ag stand tall, with their head up. They tell their stories by speaking the truth. They defend what they hold dear.
Women in Ag might come in all walks of life. A farmer, a rancher, a banker, or a vet, maybe a bookkeeper, and anything in between.

So on this day, March 8, 2017, lets all CELEBRATE all Women in Ag!!

Women in Ag all play a vital role in the agricultural community and we should all be committed to telling our stories.

So on this special day, let’s flood social media with ladies.

A Sunday Thought~Celebrate the Gift of Today

A Sunday Thought~Celebrate the Gift of Today

Celebrate Every Day!!

I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
Isahiah 61:10

My thoughts for the last couple of weeks have really been on our world. You see, how do we rejoice in the Lord when we live in an uneasy, broken world and every time we look in a newspaper, read social media, or read our emails, we hear about another awful crime or awful story?

I saw a wood sign the other day in a store that said, “Celebrate Today! I came that you might have life abundantly!” I should have bought it, but I just took a picture of it. This statement really changes my views. God has given me this day, and I want to make sure that I am doing what he wants me to do everyday. This statement is a reminder to me that in the darkest of days I can still find something to celebrate. Each day is a gift, and although on some days it may take some thought, there is always something to rejoice about.

Here are a few of examples of what God has done for me:

One of Cade’s cows had a backwards calf, and after pulling the calf out, Cade’s cow died from the complications of the delivery. Life and death happens, we all know that, this story is no different except that Cade now is responsible for feeding his calf. I think it’s a good lesson for Cade and he is getting a kick out of feeding his calf. They already have a bond. You see even when things look dark, God reminds us that he is still in control.

This past year, the repair bill on our vehicles tripled because we have so much water and mud. I mean we have replaced more ball joints, bearings, and bushings then I can even count, but guess what, we have green grass coming. You see even when you think about all the money, God reminds us that we need all the moisture, because our cattle need it.

Last week I got a phone call from a friend that I haven’t chatted with for a long time. I really appreciated her words. “Naomi, keep your head up, God has a plan for you.” You see, even when we think we are taking 5 steps backwards, someone is there to tell us its okay, now take 10 steps forward.

You see, these are only a few of my examples, but we can all learn to celebrate today. We have to look for it.

What makes your heart pitter-patter?
What makes a smile come to your face?
What makes your soul find peace?
Whatever it is, go do it. If its calling a friend, then pick up the phone and call them.
If its going for a walk, then head out the door and do it.
If its going for a horseback ride, then saddle up and go.
If its sitting in silence, then find a quiet spot.

My point is that when things that make our heart and soul feel good, then God will be able to work magic in them. We can consciously release all our worries, fears and burdens to God. When we look at all the amazing things that happen everyday- the beautiful sunrises, the miracle of life, the miracle of salvation and forgiveness, a phone call, a hug, a child’s laugh, a friend’s visit- our heart and souls will leap with wonder that will fill our minds with love and joy.

My prayer:

Lord, help me look for the magic in this day. Open my eyes to the reasons for joy so that I can celebrate life in all its fullness. Thank you for giving me life today. Thank you for everything you have given to me. Thank you for showing me your ways.

Happy Monday, friends.

A Sunday Thought~Be Grateful for What You Are

A Sunday Thought~Be Grateful for What You Are

Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation
for all abundance. ~Elkart T

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
James 1:17-19
Ever found yourself saying statements like these:

I wish I had her skinny shape. I wish I had her job. I wish I had her life. I wish I could afford her closet. I wish my house was decorated and more updated. O man, it could go on and on. Right?
Researchers say it is part of our American mind set to desire to have more, go further, be happier, and look better than our parents, and especially than our friends and neighbors. While I think that a little friendly rivalry can spur our exercise efforts if we have a workout partner, having a whole lot of envy of others can send us into a backwards spiral.
I believe that one of the best antidotes for statements of comparison is gratitude for what God has given us and for what we are. This past week, I have been really trying to focus on the good qualities God has given to me. I even wrote a list of the qualities God has given me. It was really good for me to focus on that list because when we appreciate our own abilities and the gifts God has given to us, contentment and peace will settle our hearts. The above verse, taken from James, tells us that every good gift comes from above and we should never forget.
My plan is to move my pride aside and focus on the love God has shown to me.

So, whenever I start feeling insignificant or “less than,” I will be writing a list of blessings and gifts God has given to me. When I write these lists those dark clouds of regret will begin to clear and I then will see the light of who I am and what God has graciously given to me.
On days (which has actually been a lot lately) when I feel insignificant, I think about the person I am today and the special relationship I have with Christ. It brings the sun out, so I can see the reflection of a lady who is unique and certain of her personal worth because she is loved by God and complete in Christ.
My prayer:
Lord, you are an amazingly loving and giving God. Thank you for your goodness and your love. Thank you for your changing love!

Calving Season Survival Tips

Calving Season Survival Tips

Calving Survival Tips….Be Prepared. Have a good Attitude. Check Your
Supplies. Buy Snacks.

We’re entering two of my favorite times of year right now; basketball playoffs and calving season. The goal of a basketball team is to make a deep run in the playoffs and the goal of a rancher is to save as many calves as possible. One of the key components for success in both fields is preparation. They both represent the endpoint of a lot of time, energy, rewards and resources.

Calving is the most important time of our ranch life. Not only do calves represent life, they represent generations of bloodlines, untold hours of caring for their mothers, the mothers before them, and on and on……..

We are a cow/calf operation – the herd of cows is maintained year-round to produce a new crop of calves every year. The bulls are put in with the cows at a deliberate time in the summer so that the calves will arrive during a pre-determined two-month period in the “spring”.
In honor of the heart, spirit, and weeks without sleep that comes with calving, I decided to share some of our Calving Season Survival Tips. We have had nine months to think about this. Right? My Cowboy and I sat down last night and came up with these suggestions.

Be Prepared.
Be prepared to assist in a birth and for the weather. We have family meetings about calving. We discuss where to put the heavies (cows that have not had their babies yet), we discuss where we are going to put the pairs (cows with calves on the ground), we discuss what pastures we are going to use,we discuss the weather outlook and we discuss the unknowns. It is always good to think about what to do and when to do it. As an example, if we know a storm is coming, or negative degree weather, we will move the heavies close to the house and in a protected area. We want to be able to access them as easy as possible and bring their calves in if they are getting chilled. We also usually feed the pairs in an area close to a tree row (which serves as a wind break). Therefore, the cows should bed down for the night close to the trees where they can be protected better.

“I do a lot more praying during calving.” ~My Cowboy

Have a Good Attitude.
It is really easy to run down. It requires long days and long hours to ensure the herd health of our cattle but we have learned that just keeping a good attitude about our lives helps keep our heads above water.  If we keep our head above the water we get to see the sun.
During calving season we operate under the sovereignty of Murphy’s First Law: “Whatever can go wrong – will”. So we prepare for it all. ~My Cowboy

The “Key” of information.
Calving records, pasture records, bull
records, calendar and notes can
be found in this calving book,

Check your Supplies.
We call it the Calving Toolbox. This box contains everything that we might need to help a cow and her calf. Things that this box contains include: Ear tags, Markers,Taggers (Make sure you have a spare), a calving book (for records), Milk tuber, Colostrum, Syringes, Scour Pills, Bolus Gun, Plastic Gloves (OB Gloves), Disinfectant, a bucket, Milk Replacer, Calf Bottle, Electrolytes,  Warming Box(or maybe just the passenger side of your pick-up clean out), calf puller and chains, spotlight, and flashlights. I know that I am probably missing somethings but you get the idea.

This radio is one thing that can be found in our Calving Toolbox.
It has the weather channel and a charger.

Shopping List- Snacks, Snacks and More Snacks! I always try to have a pile of good, healthy snacks because during calving you never know when you might not get to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. We also prepare a lot of homemade jerky!

Don’t forget your Spouse, Kids, Family and Friends. When we are busy and stressed, we tend to forget about the special people in our lives. If we make it a priority to keep in touch with those that we love, or take time to share a laugh, or take time to send a text, or take time to make a phone call, then it will brighten our days and  ease the stress of calving.

“Go on a date to chase away the calving blues!”~ My Cowboy

Happy Tuesday, friends! I want to hear from you. Do you have any calving advice? Are you calving yet?

A Sunday Thought~Pleasing Everyone is Impossible

A Sunday Thought~Pleasing Everyone is Impossible

Instead of criticizing, lets encourage each other.

There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.
Psalms 4:6
Have you ever heard the ancient fable story by Aesop about his son and donkey?

Well let me tell you,

One fine morning, a father and his son were on their way to market leading their donkey, which would carry their purchases home.
On the way, they met one of their neighbors, who said, “How silly of you both to walk when you have such a fine donkey.”
So the father set his son on the donkey, and they continued toward the market, still talking and and enjoying the morning.
As they came to a bend in the road, they met another , who said to the son, “How rude you are to ride while your old father must walk.”
So the child slid down from the donkey’s back, the father climbed on, and they continued toward town.
As they topped a little hill, they were met by yet another neighbor, who scowled at the father and said, “What a selfish father you are to make this dear child walk while you, a grown man, ride.
So the father pulled his son in from of him on the donkey’s back. Of course, it wasn’t long  until they met a fourth neighbor.
“How cruel you are,” he said. “To make this poor donkey carry the two of you.”
So they both slid off the donkey, and the strong father promptly picked up the animal and put it across his shoulders.
As they walked along, still talking and still enjoying the day, they met yet another neighbor, who doubled over in laughter. “That is the most stupid things I’ve ever seen! Donkeys are to be ridden, not carried!
(Story)

What did you think as you read this fable?

We all have opinions? Right or Wrong, we have opinions.

There is a fine line between what is right and what is custom; between what is wrong and what is only different, and between what is a wise action and what is a pitiful attempt to please those around us.

As I seek God’s direction today my prayer is this:
Lord, I admit I want the approval of those around me. I listen to their voices and accept their standards even though I know your ways will bring peace rather than chaos, joy rather than regret. Help me to accept your guidance first and then accept all of your strength to follow it.

Happy Monday, Friends!!
Do you have a favorite fable? Share it please.

Circle L Ranch Farmers ranchers Spring Why do we need them?

Why We Need Farmers and Ranchers….

Why We Need Farmers and Ranchers…………

Why We Need Farmers and Ranchers………….

Every year about this time I get the urge for Spring.
I get that Spring urge to clean.
I get the urge to plant a garden. Do you ever get the Spring urge?

Today I have the Spring urge to plant a garden. Cary (my Sister-In-Law) and I were discussing what we want our gardens to look like. This is our discussion:

“My garden will be beautiful, abundant and easy.”
“My garden will be big and we will save money.”

It’s good to dream, right? I mean really, all this snow we have received will help our gardens grow!!

Well then reality of life hits and so does our discussing.

“We don’t have time to care for all the plants that produce the fruits and vegetables.”
“Oh, and pulling all the weeds; who has time for that?”

So while we ponder and dream of our gardens this Spring, I had a thought!

Isn’t it so nice that there are people who are willing to work day in and day out to ensure that grocery stores, farmers markets, and meat shops carry our favorite foods?

Have you thanked a farmer or a rancher today for the food you eat?
Have you thought about why we need farmers and ranchers?

In no particular order, here are a few reasons why we all need farmers and ranchers:

God isn’t giving us any more land, therefore we need farmers and ranchers to take care of the land that is left. Farmers and Ranchers take seriously their commitment to their land and animals. One of our goals at the Circle L Ranch is to leave the land better. The only way we can do that is to take care of it.

Farmers and Ranchers know their stuff, and by stuff I mean they know the ins and outs of their operations. They know what needs to be done and when it needs done. They know when the cattle need feed and when the crops need planted. I personally know the STUFF and it is not for everyone.

Farmers and Ranchers care. No, really, we do care. Farmers and Ranchers are special characters, they are confident in what they do.

We love bananas, strawberries, rice, soybeans, corn, and so on right? Each and every farm and/or ranch has its special crop(s) they grow. At our place in the Sandhills, our soil is best known for growing grass for our cattle. Land differs around the world. We need all of these farmers and ranchers to ensure our food chain is filled with products we all like. Farmers and Ranchers know their soil, their climates, and can produce food more efficiently because they know what their land can do.

Without Farmers and Ranchers most of the world, especially those that live in cities, would lack a source of protein. I mean, the reality is that the majority of people can not raise cattle or chickens at their houses and they don’t have the time to take care of them, or space. Farmers and Ranchers ensure that we all have a valuable source of protein to add to our diet. For some good information about protein, I want you to check out my friend, Michaela’s Blog-Cowgirl Boots and Running Shoes, She does a fine job talking about health and nutrition.

We wouldn’t have clothes on our backs without Farmers and Ranchers. I know I don’t have time nor do I know how to grow and gin my own cotton. I also know that I don’t have time nor do I know how to make shoes. We need their decades of experience and traditions of growing good fuel and fiber to ensure that our life continues.

I appreciate all the farmers and ranchers that bring food to our table.
I appreciate all the farmers and ranchers that grow items so we all can be clothed.

I may or may not still have the Spring time urge for a small garden this year, but I am still thankful for all the farmers and ranchers that provide us with fresh, wholesome products we can enjoy year around.

I am still working on my Spring time urge for cleaning.  I need the Spring time maid to show up.
Do you happen to have her number?!!

Happy Friday to you all.
